Laegreid wanted to make sure that he defended the Yellow Bib in style. “Last time I wore the Yellow Bib I had a bad day, so I wanted to go home with a good feeling.”
As for the last standing stage that he cleaned calmly. “Normally, I would be very eager and maybe take the front (lane 1 instead of shooting on lane 3). Today, I was like, ‘you don’t need top be the first into the range. I was calm and easy. The coach told me yesterday that we can shoot the targets and to day I did!”
Italy’s Tommaso Giacomel, with two penalties finished third for the second time this week, 24 seconds back, setting an Italian men’s record of three consecutive podium finishes. His Ruhpolding Mass Start win started the string.
“I am really happy. Today’s racing was really fun, I wasn’t thinking about going for another podium. I was just thinking of doing great biathlon. My shape is good and I had to do it in a proper way…Doing a double podium here is insane…The love from the crowd made my week very special.”
Norway’s Martin Uldal, with one penalty finished fourth, 39 seconds back. Slovenia’s Jakov Fak moved from sixth in the sprint to fifth today, with one penalty, 46.9 seconds back. Norway again dominated the Flower Ceremony with four men as Johannes Thingnes Boe sixth, with three penalties, 47.9 seconds back.
By the time the men started the weekend’s final competition, it was cloudy and windless after the earlier precipitation ended. Laegreid led the field into the first prone stage and cleaned, leaving with a lead that he never relinquished. Tarjei and Giacomel also cleaned the first stage, leaving a second back.
The Yellow Bib and Tarjei did the same in the second prone while Giacomel picked up his first penalty, falling 20 seconds back.
Laegreid and Tarjei went shot-for-shot five times in the first standing stage, remaining in the top two spots. Giacomel matched a couple of seconds slower and Fak also clean in fourth.
The trio came to the deciding final standing stage together. Laegreid, in lane three, sealing the victory while the Italian, Tarjei and Fak all missed a shot.
The Yellow Bib continued pulling away in the last loop, grabbing a Norwegian flag in the stadium, waving it and pointing at his Yellow Bib at the finish.
