Single Mixed Relay to make Olympic debut at Alpes 2030
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board today announced that the Single Mixed Relay will feature on the Olympic programme for the very first time at French Alpes 2030, in recognition of the event’s thrilling format and widespread appeal.
The event will form part of the largest-ever Olympic biathlon programme with 12 biathlon medal events contested at the Alpes 2030 Games, building on the sport’s record Olympic success at Milano Cortina 2026. Athletes will compete in iconic Le Grand-Bornand – the home venue of French biathlon.
The Single Mixed Relay’s Olympic inclusion marks a landmark moment for biathlon, reinforcing the event’s explosive growth and its proven track record in delivering thrilling finishes and electric atmospheres over the last decade. It also opens the door for more nations to enter the fight for Olympic medals, widening the sport’s universality and generating even greater fan interest.
IBU President Olle Dahlin said:
“We are delighted that the Single Mixed Relay will debut at the Olympic Games at Alpes 2030. We are grateful to the IOC for this opportunity and excited to showcase the format in one of our sport’s most iconic biathlon venues.
“The Single Mixed Relay first featured at a Biathlon World Championships in 2019 as part of our ongoing commitment to creating more engaging and broadcast-friendly formats. It has become one of the most exciting formats in the sport, capturing the thrill and unpredictability of biathlon while showcasing our women's and men’s athletes’ excellence on the same field of play. Its place on the Olympic programme will cement this position and give millions of people the chance to experience and enjoy its intensity and excitement for the very first time.”
Expectations for biathlon at Alpes 2030 are high after Milano Cortina 2026 delivered unprecedented global reach, record-breaking audiences, and a digital surge that elevated the sport to new heights. In addition to securing among the highest TV audiences across multiple European markets, the IBU’s social media channels were the most engaging of any single discipline at the Olympic Winter Games 2026. Now, with the inclusion of the Single Mixed Relay, fans can expect an even greater Olympic biathlon programme in 2030.
The Single Mixed Relay made its debut at the IBU Biathlon World Cup in 2015 and featured for the first time at the IBU World Biathlon Championships in 2019.
