The Loop One Festival is aiming to become a showcase for sustainable event management, by minimising environmental impact while ensuring a positive legacy for future sports events.

Organised by the IBU, the Loop One Festival will contribute to the federation’s five strategic Focus Areas set out in the IBU’s 2020-2030 Sustainability Strategy: Climate, Sport, Venue & Events, People and Communication and Awareness.

As the inaugural edition of the event, a key goal will be to set sustainability baselines, including a CO2 emissions baseline, for future festivals.

Key sustainability highlights of the 2025 edition, balancing environmental, social and economic aspects, include:

Environmental Sustainability

Mobility

• One of the considerations in selecting the Munich Olympic Park was its excellent accessibility by public transportation. To encourage visitors to make full use of this transport network, public transportation to and from the Loop One Festival is included at no charge for anyone with an entry ticket, covering travel by any means of transport in the entire service area of the Munich Transport and Tariff Association (MVV)

• Similarly, all hotel partners were surveyed for sustainable practices, including climate-friendly diets such as vegetarian and vegan options

Resource use

• The event operations will use fully renewable electric power and low carbon temporary energy sources*

• No single-use table ware will be used. A circular approach was adopted with a deposit-based multi-use cups and plates system implemented in cooperation with Munich Olympic Park

• Visitors will be encouraged to bring their own bottles and take advantage of water stations available throughout the park

• Food options for visitors have been selected to balance healthy and local providers

Environmental protection

• Electric targets will be used to ensure thorough lead collection at the shooting range

• A ‘leave no-trace’ policy will be enforced to guarantee the park is left intact post-event

Social Sustainability

• The event will focus on inclusion through accessibility and family-friendliness. Free entry will be provided to all activities on Saturday and to watch the competition along the course on Sunday

• Event staff including volunteers will be trained on event values and sustainability engagement as part of the commitment to sustainability education

• Informational activities promoting sustainable practices will be integrated throughout the festival, ranging from a sustainability quiz as part of the children’s Loop One Pass, information displays, and panel discussion on sustainable nutrition

Financial Sustainability

• Local partners have been prioritised to support the regional economy and reduce transport emissions

• Reusable materials for branding and infrastructure have been prioritised

Inclusion of Para Biathlon

As part of its commitment to promoting Para Biathlon and inclusion, the Loop One Festival will kick off on Saturday 18 October with a Para Biathlon event to showcase the world’s top para biathletes.

Para athletes representing eight different nations will compete in all three categories used in international para biathlon competitions: standing athletes, sitting athletes and visually impaired athletes.

The para biathlon competitions on Saturday starting from 11:00 CET will include

• Mixed relay for sitting women and men

• Single mixed relay for visually impaired women and men (with guides)

• Mass start competition for standing men
