No permission to start for Sturla Holm Laegreid in Lenzerheide Mass Start after rifle incident

The International Biathlon Union together with the competition jury for the Men Mass Start at the BMW IBU World Cup Biathlon in Lenzerheide has decided to prohibit Sturla Holm Laegreid from starting in the competition due to a breach of the IBU safety regulations (IBU Event and Competition Rules Art. 8.5.1 & 11.2.d) The decision is taken based on a rifle incident in the Norwegian team accommodation, where a shot was fired during dry shooting. No people were harmed at the incident.

The Biathlon Integrity Unit has been informed and will work with the Swiss authorities, who are investigating the case, to gather further information and to decide whether additional actions will be taken.

"I am deeply sorry for this incident, and strongly apologize to the whole biathlon family, my teammates, and the hotel owner for what happened. This is a brutal reminder for me and for all biathlon athletes - how important safety routines truly are", says Sturla Holm Laegreid.

The IBU highly commends the responsible behaviour of the Norwegian team and athlete by reporting the incident and by recognizing the importance of safety regulations at all times.
