Forest Of Champions: IBU Staff plants 800 trees with Philipp Nawrath and Johannes Kuehn

The International Biathlon Union, in collaboration with Climate Partners Viessmann and supported by the Bavarian Forestry Commission, has taken the next step in its “Forest of Champions” initiative. On 28 April, the project moved from concept to reality near Hintersee in Ramsau, Berchtesgaden, where 800 of a planned total of 1,281 seedlings were planted.

A group of 13 IBU employees was joined by German biathletes Philipp Nawrath and Johannes Kühn to carry out the planting together with the Bavarian Forestry. The day was marked by hands-on work and team spirit set in the scenic surroundings of the Bavarian Alps.

Originally introduced during the winter season, the “Forest of Champions” initiative aims to create a lasting environmental legacy by linking sporting success with reforestation efforts. The planting near Hintersee transforms the idea into a measurable contribution to nature, biodiversity and the long-term health of alpine ecosystems.

As the IBU’s long-standing Climate Partner, Viessmann played a central role in the initiative. Activities in the "Forest Of Champions" initiative have been carried out jointly by the IBU and Viessmann, underlining a shared commitment to climate responsibility across sport, industry and athletes.

The involvement of IBU staff further underlined the initiative’s practical and collective nature. Rather than remaining a symbolic concept, the planting day became a shared experience that connected employees, athletes, and partners through direct action on the ground. As such, the "Forest Of Champions" initiative sits right at the heart of the IBU's Sustainability Focus Areas and Framework, connecting sport, climate, events and people through communication and awareness measures.
