The International Biathlon Union (IBU) today announced that Niklas Carlsson, former CEO of the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships Are 2019, will take over as IBU Secretary General from 1 September 2019.

Carlsson will bring substantial experience in managing successful organisations and delivering world-class international events. Before he headed the Organising Committee for Are 2019, the 44 year-old served as Secretary General of the Swedish Ski Federation from 2011-2014. He joined the National Federation from the International Ski Federation (FIS), where he worked as Event and Sponsoring Manager for three years. He also sat on the board of Falun 2015, the company for the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships; and the board of World Championships Region, a co-owned company by Are 2019 and Östersund 2019 responsible for promoting the World Championships in the region.

Carlsson who is fluent in English and German, has also served as Head Coach and Alpine Director for the Swedish Ski Federation. The father of two children holds a coaching diploma from the University of Physical Education in Stockholm.

IBU President Olle Dahlin commented:

“We are delighted to announce Niklas Carlsson as IBU Secretary General. The Executive Board made it a prerequisite in the recruitment process that only candidates with extensive and diverse multi-stakeholder experience would be considered, and there is no doubt Niklas meets that criteria. He comes from winter sports, he has run a major organising committee and National Federation, he has expert insights and knowledge of the daily business of an International Federation and how it is run; and as a Board member, is familiar with high-level corporate management and oversight. With his strong leadership experience and winter sports background, I have no doubt Niklas will do an excellent job in heading our operations and developing the sport of biathlon as part of our Strategic Plan.”

Niklas Carlsson added:

“I am excited to join the IBU at this thrilling time for the sport and the federation. I am looking forward to getting to know the biathlon family and will work myself into every detail of this fascinating sport, which I have followed closely in the past. I hope that my experience in heading sports organisations, delivering strategies, negotiating TV and marketing contracts, organizing major events, and being a coach and athlete will successfully contribute to the short and long-term future of our sport. Enhancing the strong foundation biathlon already has, the experienced team in Salzburg and I will deliver the execution of the new Strategic Plan and the implementation of institutional reforms.”

Carlsson will replace Alf Koksvik who has served as IBU Interim Secretary General since 1 March 2019.

IBU President Olle Dahlin added:

“On behalf of the biathlon family, I would like to thank Alf for his fantastic work as Interim Secretary General and the commitment to biathlon and dedication to the team he has shown over the last six months. He leaves a strong foundation for Niklas to build on.”

Carlsson will move to Salzburg and start his work at the IBU headquarters in Austria in September.
