IBU announces BMW IBU World Cup Biathlon schedule for January 2021

The International Biathlon Union (IBU) today announced that there will be three events on the BMW IBU World Cup Biathlon circuit in January 2021, as originally scheduled. In-keeping with the federation’s COVID-19 principle of prioritising athlete safety by minimising travel and its associated risks, the events, however, will now be held in only two venues.

Oberhof (GER) will host the first two World Cup weeks of 2021, replacing Rupholding (GER) as the host of the second event, to allow athletes to remain in one place. Antholz-Anterselva will host the third World Cup at the end of January. The dates and competition schedules for all three events are unchanged.

The IBU worked closely with the German National Federation to select the venue for the two German World Cups in January. Thus, the IBU supported the German National Federation’s decision that with Oberhof set to host the IBU World Championships Biathlon 2023, the venue would benefit from maximum opportunities to test and enhance its hosting capacity.

IBU President Olle Dahlin said:

“Once again, we are satisfied that we have found the best solution to the current challenges. Athlete safety and the safety of everyone at our events remains our number one priority and we maintain that minimising the amount of travelling required, along with health regulations at the events, is one of the most effective ways of protecting people’s wellbeing. We are looking forward to three amazing World Cup events in January 2021 and already look forward to returning to our traditional World Cup stop in Ruhpolding in January 2022.”

IBU Executive Board Member Franz Steinle, who also serves as President of the German Ski Association, said:

“It is the common task of the IBU and its National Federations to secure the Biathlon World Cup winter 2020/21. The strategy of the International Biathlon Union to hold two World Cup events in one place is the right thing to do under the current conditions. The German Ski Association is completely aligned with this strategy and agreed to hold the two German World Cups in only one venue.

“This was not an easy decision as Oberhof and Ruhpolding both are long-standing and experienced World Cup hosts. After consulting with both organizing committees, I am proud to say that everyone involved is aware of the particular situation and understands this decision. Oberhof will host the IBU World Championships Biathlon 2023. Numerous investments into the infrastructure have been made in the past few months, which we need to test under World Cup conditions with the World Championships in mind.”

All World Cup events will be staged in accordance with the IBU COVID-19 Event Guidelines and relevant national regulations. Decisions regarding if spectators can attend the World Cups, and if so, how many, will be taken based on the respective national health regulations.

The schedule for the World Cups in February and March 2021 will be decided in November 2020.
