First Globe Winners decision under special Covid-19 competition rules

The IBU World Championships Biathlon in Pokljuka, Slovenia moves into its second week with the Individual competitions on Tuesday (16 February, 12:05 pm) and Wednesday (17 February, 14:30 pm). These are the third and final Individual competitions this season and will therefore decide the respective discipline scores for women and men.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the expected difficulties during the season, the IBU adapted its Event and Competition Rules ahead of the season at its Congress in November 2020. It was decided that there are additional dropped results, not only for the BMW IBU World Cup Total Score, but also in the discipline scores.

The number of dropped results depends on the total amount of events held in each discipline. For the BMW IBU World Cup Total Score there will be four dropped results, as 17 competitions have already been held for men and women (see table below). The IBU chose to take a gradual approach to try and provide a fair playing field and balance the uncertainties which could occur due to positive cases, quarantine for contact persons, potential cancellation of events or travel restrictions for athletes from certain nations.

Total Score & Discipline Scores

Number of competitions | Dropped results

17 - 26 | 4

9 - 16 | 3

6 - 8 | 2

3 - 5 | 1

1 - 2 | 0

For the Nations Cup the following table applies:

NC

17 - 20 | 5

13 - 16 | 4

9 - 12 | 3
