While biathletes on the course were battling for every hundredth of a second, visitors at the “Biathlon 4 All” event had the chance to experience the sport for themselves. Under the guidance of around 50 dedicated BSV instructors – including coaches as well as junior athletes from across Bavaria – more than 5,000 spectators got a hands-on taste of biathlon.
Recruited by the Bavarian Ski Federation (BSV), the instructors represented regions such as Arber, Chiemgau, Oberfranken, Oberland and Werdenfels, introducing newcomers to the fundamentals of biathlon shooting and sharing expert advice, tips, and plenty of encouragement.
For most participants, it was a fascinating challenge to realise how difficult standing shooting can be. Many knew biathlon only from television, but after trying it themselves, their respect for professional athletes grew considerably. Hitting the targets proved far more demanding than it might appear on screen.
Even casual visitors strolling through the Olympiapark were drawn in by the activity, seizing the unexpected opportunity to try biathlon for the first time. The event turned out to be an excellent promotion for the sport, combining fun, accessibility, and insight into the precision and concentration biathlon demands.
Martina Seidl, youth biathlon coach in Ruhpolding, praised the spirit of the team:
“Our instructors were very impressed by the entire event and took away a great deal of motivation! It was especially nice to see that young people and students from the regions were involved. It was a fantastic team – the collaboration was great fun and a wonderful experience for everyone involved.”
Peter John from the Allgäu Ski Association agreed:
“It was a truly enjoyable event, and the idea of bringing biathlon to the city worked very well. The high demand at the laser rifle stands clearly showed how meaningful this initiative is – it will certainly help attract new young biathletes.”
Mik Broschart, Biathlon Sports Director for the Chiemgau Ski Association, added:
“The team was perfectly coordinated and highly motivated. Whether school or youth athletes, everyone engaged with the visitors in a competent and professional way, contributing to the success of the event. Having Arnd Peiffer and Magdalena Neuner as guests was a real highlight.”
He also emphasised the enthusiasm of the participants:
“Every single visitor was thrilled and had a fantastic time. I’ve never seen so many smiling and proud faces in one day – especially for families with children, it was a unique opportunity to experience biathlon up close.”
