World Championships 2028 and 2029: Hochfilzen and Oslo-Holmenkollen

It's official: Hochfilzen (AUT) and Oslo-Holmenkollen (NOR) have been selected as hosts for the 2028 and 2029 IBU World Championships Biathlon.

In honour, we prepared a throwback to the milestone events at these two traditional biathlon venues.

World Championships host: 1978, 1998, 2005, 2017

The highlights from Hochfilzen include the first-ever World Championships with a small bore rifle in 1978, where Frank Ulrich won gold in the Sprint and silver in the Individual event. In 2005, Ole Einar Bjoerndalen secured gold in four events (and Uschi Disl two). The 2017 championships saw Laura Dahlmeier winning 6/6 medals, including five golds, two more than Marie Dorin Habert a year earlier in Oslo-Holmenkollen.

World Championships host: 1986, 1990, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2016

IBU World Championships in Oslo-Holmenkollen biathlon events have seen impressive performances over the years. In 1986, Valeri Medvetsev from the Soviet Union secured three gold medals in the Individual, Sprint, and Relay events. Sven Fischer from Germany made a mark in 1999 (when Kontiolahti hosted half of the events) by winning the Individual and the Mass Start. In 2000, Pavel Rostovtsev from Russia claimed three silver medals. The 201 championships also witnessed Marie Dorin Habert making history by winning 6/6 medals, the first-ever athlete to do so. Dorin Habert won in the Individual, Mass Start and Mixed Relay, finished second in the Sprint and Women's Relay and clinched bronze in the Pursuit. The most men's standout performance was in 2016 when Martin Fourcade from France dominated by winning five out of six available medals, four of which were gold, in a career-best World Championships performance from one of the greatest biathletes ever.
