Laura Dahlmeier passes away in mountaineering accident in Pakistan

Former Olympic and World Champion Laura Dahlmeier has passed away following a severe accident during a mountaineering trip in Pakistan, her management has confirmed.

Dahlmeier's accident occurred in the Karakorum mountains in Pakistan. An international rescue team coordinated the rescue operations.

On Wednesday, 30 July 2025, Dahlmeier's management confirmed the deeply saddening news that the 31-year-old had not survived the severe accident.

Laura Dahlmeier passed away on 28 July during a fatal rockfall accident at Laila Peak in the Pakistani Karakorum mountains. The rescue operations were unsuccessful and concluded on the evening of 29 July.

During an abseiling maneuver, Dahlmeier was caught in a rockfall - her rope partner called emergency services right away, rescue operations started immediately. However, continued rockfall and difficult terrain made the rescue impossible and Dahlmeier's rope partner had to retreat from the danger zone at nighttime after not witnessing further signs of life

Dahlmeier's management continued that further rescue attempts through a military helicopter and on the mountain itself were impossible due to the persistent threat of rockfall. Based on the observations of the military helicopter and Dahlmeier's rope partner, it's assumed that the accident was fatal right away.

The 31 year-old expressed in her will that any rescue operations to recover her body must not endanger anyone else - and that her body should remain in the mountains in case such a scenario ever came to pass.

The IBU and the entire biathlon family mourns the death of Dahlmeier - our thoughts are with her friends, teammates and her family.
