REGIONAL EVENT - SUMMER BIATHLON ASIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS - SHCHUCHINSK, KAZ
Between August 30th and September 4th 2023 the Center for Olympic Preparation in Winter Sports in Shchuchinsk hosted the IBU Summer Biathlon Asian Championships. Athletes from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, India, Mongolia and South Korea took part in the championships.
Despite rainy weather conditions, around 130 athletes in three age group competed for 18 sets of medals in three types of races: individual, super sprint and sprint.
One of IBU's strategic goals is to extend the reach of biathlon, including expanding the reach of the sport in Asia. The Kazakhstan Biathlon Union, which initiated the creation of the Asian Biathlon Committee, hosted the first regional event in Asia, meant to develop biathlon in the Asian region. "The main focus of the event is at youth athletes, to give them more opportunity to participate in international competitions", said the President of the KBU Yermek Kizatov.
