Biathlon maintains athlete and event quota for Milano-Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games

The IOC Executive Board today confirmed that biathlon will maintain its 11 medal events and athlete quota for the Milano-Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games, which is set to be a spectacular showcase of Olympic biathlon.

The Olympic biathlon competitions will take place at the world-class venue in Antholz-Anterselva which is home to some of the world’s most passionate biathlon fans and has hosted numerous elite biathlon events including the 2020 World Championships.

While the IBU has no doubt the biathlon competitions at Milano-Cortina 2026 will be among the best ever, the IBU is disappointed that the Single Mixed Relay will not feature at the Games and believes it would have further enhanced the Olympic programme and provided opportunities for smaller biathlon nations. However, the IBU fully respects the IOC decision and recognises the difficult task of accommodating all International Federation requests for new events in the existing programme.

The IBU will continue to promote the Single Mixed Relay at its World Cups and World Championships where it has proven very popular with fans and TV audiences.

The IBU will also continue to work for an extended reach of the very popular sport of biathlon and the need for increased athlete quotas and the involvement of more NOCs at the Olympic Winter Games.

In the meantime, the IBU will continue to work closely with Milano-Cortina 2026 and the IOC to ensure incredible Olympic biathlon competitions in four years’ time.
