IBU mourns death of Brigitte Bentele

The International Biathlon Union (IBU) is deeply saddened by the passing of Brigitte Bentele, one of the pioneering female administrators in biathlon and a figure whose lifelong dedication helped shape the modern development of our sport.

Brigitte Bentele broke new ground as the first-ever woman to serve as an IBU Technical Referee and later as an IBU Technical Delegate. At a time when female leadership in international sport administration was rare, she set a powerful example through competence, integrity, and commitment.

For many years, she served as Organising Committee Secretary and Chief of Competition at the World Cup in Ruhpolding. She helped establish the IBU accreditation services, managing the system and its operations over several decades with professionalism and precision, and contributing significantly to the successful delivery of numerous IBU World Cup events and World Championships.

As a member of the IBU Development Committee, Brigitte Bentele was among the dedicated enthusiasts who helped guide the IBU onto its independent path, laying important foundations for its long-term growth and global success.

The IBU extends its sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of working alongside her. Brigitte Bentele’s legacy will remain an integral part of biathlon’s history.
