From 16 to 21 September 2024, the Austrian biathlon hub of Hochfilzen hosted the IBU IPC Summer Development Camp 2024, bringing together 27 participants, including athletes, coaches, and aspiring referees, from eight nations. Supported by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), the historic inaugural edition of this camp focussed on empowering Para Biathlon beginners with essential skills and confidence to thrive on the international stage.

Despite unseasonable snowfall, which blanketed the area with over 50 cm of snow, the camp proceeded smoothly, thanks to the resilience and adaptability of participants and the help of the hosting team in Hochfilzen. Guided by experienced coaches like Susan Dunklee, a two-time IBU World Championships silver medallist, and Rolf Nuber of Germany, the programme offered roller skiing, shooting practice, and strength training, along with a specially designed practice competition.

Tomi-Pekka Riihivuori, IBU Para Biathlon Manager, commented:

Participants shared overwhelmingly positive feedback, with 95% expressing satisfaction with the training. Many highlighted the increase in their theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and overall confidence. The camp also fostered camaraderie through evening activities and helpful expert lessons, ensuring a balance between rigorous training and social engagement.

As a flagship initiative on the IBU's journey to integrating Para Biathlon across all operations, the camp underscored its vision of inclusion and nurturing talent at all levels. With its combination of world-class facilities, dedicated coaching, and an inclusive atmosphere, the IBU IPC Summer Development Camp set a high standard for future events.
