IBU Hosts Second Edition of the Unconscious Bias Workshop

The International Biathlon Union proudly hosted its second Unconscious Bias Workshop, once again shining a spotlight on its commitment to gender equality as outlined in its strategic plan, Target 26. The online workshops were held on April 9th and 18th 2024, in collaboration with the ESCP Business School Berlin, under the guidance of Prof. Marion Festing.

This year’s workshop built upon the success of the inaugural 2021 session, offering a concise yet impactful program spread across two days. The sessions were specifically designed for IBU staff and National Federation (NF) representatives, with each group participating in two 1.5-hour workshops focused on recognizing and addressing unconscious biases. Participants were encouraged to spend the time between sessions reflecting on what they learned to deepen their understanding and apply it more effectively in their roles.

Diverse Participation and Engagement

A total of 50 individuals participated in the workshops, with a notable 70% male attendance at the NF-focused sessions. This demographic underscores the ongoing need to involve more women in all aspects of biathlon, from coaching and technical roles to decision-making positions.

Prof. Marion Festing led the workshops, providing valuable insights into the subtle biases that can influence decision-making and interactions within the sport. Her expertise in human resource management and intercultural leadership helped participants explore challenges and solutions related to diversity and inclusion within the biathlon community.

Max Cobb, IBU Secretary-General, emphasized the importance of these workshops in fostering a respectful and inclusive environment. He encouraged all attendees to use the knowledge gained to make ethical decisions and promote a culture of integrity. The workshops also addressed practical strategies for dealing with microaggressions and ensuring fair treatment within the workplace.

Looking Ahead

The IBU continues to lead by example, striving to make gender equality a priority. The union remains dedicated to its Gender Equality Strategy and encourages the biathlon family to actively promote and involve women in every facet of the sport.
