Five Burning Questions for Camille Bened

48 hours ago, France’s Camille Bened took another huge step in her biathlon career. Leaving the last standing stage in the Oestersund Single Mixed Relay well behind Germany’s Marlene Fichtner who was holding the last podium spot, Bened flew around the last loop, hunting down her rival. In the last 50 meters, Bened passed Fichtner, securing third place for France and her first-ever World Cup podium in only her fourth start in the senior circuit.

Although third place with teammate Fabien Claude was a career milestone, Bened is no stranger to biathlon success. Last season, she won the IBU Cup Total Score, as well as the Pursuit and Mass Start Scores. Stepping a few years back, the now 25-year-old won the 2021 IBU Junior Women’s Individual World Championship. also anchoring France to Junior Women’s Relay Gold medal.

A few hours after her Oestersund Single Mixed Relay heroics, Bened answered our Five Burning Questions and revealed what she misses most about home when travelling all winter.

Biathlonworld: Although this was not your first World Cup, what was going through your mind standing on the start today waiting for that first exchange?

Camille Bened: I was pretty calm and above all very excited to start this new season. I couldn’t wait to get back out on the track. BW: Did you think you could catch the podium when you started that last loop; was it harder than you expected?

CB: After the last shooting, Marlene was right in front of me, which meant the podium was right there. I had only one goal: to catch her. It wasn’t easy, but I really wanted that first World Cup podium.

BW: What does a day like this do for your confidence with individual competitions coming up in the next days?

CB: A day like this definitely brings a lot of confidence. It allows me to feel a bit more relaxed heading into the individual race. Even though all the work has to be done again, I think I’m in good shape and I can’t wait to start he individual events.

BW: What was the biggest lesson you learned in the several seasons in the IBU Cup?

CB: Perseverance. I spent a lot of time in the IBU Cup with many injuries and physical issues, and I never gave up. If I am where I am today, it’s because all those challenges shaped me and made me stronger. BW: Now that you have your first podium, what is your next goal?

CB: A podium in an individual race. Let’s say this first podium made me hungry for more, and I want even more now.

Biathlonworld Bonus Question: What three things do you miss the most about home during the season?

CB: My family, because I’m very attached to them. French food, because after Italian food, it’s the best…And my bed 😅

With her kind of talent, grit and determination, don’t be surprised to see Camille Bened among the top three in an individual World Cup competition sooner than later.
