Head 2 Head
Vita Semerenko and her twin sister Valja have been together in life since birth and in biathlon since first taking up biathlon in 2001. They won their first international medal, relay Silver at the 2005 IBU YJWCH in Kontiolahti. Since that time, they have teamed up and stood on the podium on many occasions, as teammates on successful Ukrainian relay teams. The two have seemed to shadow each other’s performances on many occasions. They once came as close as possible to realizing a shared dream, tying for first place in a major competition. At the 2007 Winter Universiade, they sprinted for the finish line in the women’s pursuit, virtually arm-in-arm, with Vita claiming the Gold medal by .1 seconds over Valja taking Silver.
The highlight of her career to date was at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games where she won the sprint Bronze medal; then led off the Ukrainian Gold medal relay team. At the end of that season, she encountered a series of injuries, and gave birth to a son in 2016, before returning for the 2017-18 season, a break of over three years. Urged by her husband to return; Vita returned with a bang. At Hochfilzen, the Gold medal relay team reunited for the first time since Sochi finishing second. She backed that up with clean-shooting third place the next week in the sprint at Le Grand Bornand.
