IBU REGIONAL EVENTS: Ignalina (LTU) and Fossum (NOR)

The International Biathlon Union (IBU) Regional Events continue to captivate audiences and athletes alike. Recently, two remarkable competitions in Ignalina, Lithuania, and Fossum, Norway, showcased the resilience and talent of biathletes from across the globe.

Baltic Biathlon Cup - Ignalina, Lithuania

On the 17th and 18th of February 2024, Ignalina, Lithuania, hosted the Baltic Biathlon Cup, which saw over 60 athletes from Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Finland participate. The event faced two contrasting days of weather - a warm and rainy Saturday followed by a sunny Sunday. The races were conducted smoothly, thanks to the extensive preparation of the tracks, which were covered with approximately 60 cm of artificial snow. Despite the varying conditions, the athletes persevered, showcasing their skills and determination.

Regional Event Fossum, Norway

The next stop in the IBU Regional Events series was Fossum, Norway, on the 24th and 25th of February 2024. This event saw participation from over 400 athletes representing Norway, Sweden, Finland, Greenland, Germany, and Switzerland. This year, Fossum IF had the privilege of hosting the event, which was a combined event for the IBU Regional Event and the Norwegian cup. The schedule included a short individual race on Saturday and a sprint on Sunday. Results for the races are forthcoming from the organizing committee.

In addition to the races, the organizers at Fossum IF implemented a unique accommodation program where athletes could live with hosting families from Fossum. This initiative was well-received by athletes and families, with Lydia Hiernickel from Switzerland praising the arrangement as an excellent experience that she would recommend to other event organizers.
