IBU Joins Global Mutirão for Climate Action: Protecting the Future of Winter Sport

The IBU has joined fellow signatories of the Sports for Climate Action Framework in a united call to the global leaders convening at COP30 as representatives of governments and major institutions to harness the power of sport to take climate action to the next level.

Sport transcends borders, languages and generations — it connects communities and inspires billions. As the world faces the accelerating impacts of climate change, the IBU believes that sport must play its part not only by reducing its own footprint but by driving awareness and inspiring tangible action for a sustainable future.

IBU President Olle Dahlin said:

Every winter reminds us of what we stand to lose — and what we still have the power to protect. The International Biathlon Union is committed to leading by example and proud to join this global mutirão for climate action, so that the next generation can continue to compete on snow and that winter remains a season of inspiration, not loss.

The communiqué, Sport: A Global Mutirão for Climate Action, emphasizes sport’s unique ability to unite people and catalyse change across society — from clean energy and sustainable mobility to youth education and community resilience. It calls on public and private institutions, cities, and national governments to integrate sport into their climate strategies and support initiatives that use sport as a tool for engagement and transformation.

Through its efforts under the Sustainability Strategy 2020-2030 (see here), the IBU is already taking decisive steps — from reducing event emissions and promoting active mobility to empowering athletes as climate advocates. By standing together with the broader sporting community, the IBU aims to ensure that winter sport continues to thrive for generations to come.

Together, sport can turn ambition into action — and play to win for the planet.
