IBU Academy Basic Course 2024: A Return to Foundational Training and Coaching

For the third time, the IBU Basic Course brought together 20 enthusiastic coaches from 19 different National Federations. This foundational course, held from April 20th to 25th, 2024, provided an intensive week of training and networking, reinforcing the commitment to advancing the sport of biathlon globally.

Participants engaged in a comprehensive schedule that covered crucial aspects of biathlon coaching. Experts delivered sessions on a wide range of topics. Stefan Lindinger led the skiing technique sessions, while Torsten Thrän focused on waxing equipment. Shooting technique was expertly covered by Engelbert Sklorz and Gerold Sattlecker, ensuring coaches received in-depth knowledge in this critical area. Tanja Winterhalder and Thomas Wünn provided specialized instruction on ski and rifle equipment, respectively. Hannes Kock discussed applied training science, Matthias Ahrens addressed coaches' soft skills, and Dagmara Gerasimuk delved into the business aspects of sports. These diverse topics ensured that coaches not only enhanced their technical knowledge but also learned effective ways to inspire and manage their athletes.

Practical and Theoretical Learning

The Basic Course was characterized by a blend of practical and theoretical learning, with experienced lecturers and educators like Matthias Ahrens, Martina Seidl, and Nika Blazenic leading the sessions. The environment was not only educational but also interactive and fun, promoting a learning atmosphere where coaches could share experiences and insights.

Inspirational Venues and Team Building

Midway through the week, the course took place at impressive venues such as ULSZ Rif, one of Austria’s largest sports centers, and the Chiemgau Arena in Ruhpolding, a famous World Cup venue. These settings provided an inspirational backdrop for the sessions, allowing coaches to visualize the competitive paths their athletes could follow. The IBU Headquarters also served as a key location, adding a significant touch to the overall experience. The interaction among coaches fostered strong team dynamics and a shared commitment to biathlon development.

A Foundation for Future Success

As the course wrapped up, the coaches departed with new skills, knowledge, and connections, ready to implement what they had learned in their home countries and contribute to the ongoing development of biathlon. This second iteration of the Basic Course in Rif and Ruhpolding highlighted the critical role of education and collaboration in enhancing coaching excellence within the sport of biathlon.
