In the swirling winds of Otepaa, in one of the wildest Mixed Relays — where 24 teams skied 72 penalty loops — Team USA was one of only four teams to avoid a penalty loop, sensationally finishing third, ahead of Norway, Germany and France and behind only Sweden and an equally surprising Switzerland, for a historic podium and being voted the fans’ favourite.
