Martin Ponsiluoma completed a sweep of the Swedish Summer Championships today, pulling away from Sebastian Samuelsson in the last loop of today’s 10 km Sprint, securing victory in 24:28.7 with three penalties, a day after winning the 20 km Individual. Elvira Oeberg showed her track prowess both days. taking today’s 7.5 km Sprint in 19:47.2, after second in Saturday’s 15 km Individual behind Anna Magnusson.

Ponsiluoma called Sunday’s win, “a tough sprint. I felt that the incredibly long 20 km yesterday kept me from pushing as hard on the tracks.”

Magnusson Wins Individual

Magnusson and Ponsiluoma opened the first day of the Swedish Summer Championships in Oestersund, with three-penalty 44:20.7 and two-penalty 48:16.3 victories in the in the 15 and 20 km Individual, respectively.

Magnusson cleaned the first prone, setting the bar. Then after two standing penalties fell behind Ella Halvarsson. A clean second prone Magnusson back in the lead which she held through the finish. Elvira flew around the tracks moving to second after the final standing for second place, 46.4 seconds back. Halvarsson, with four penalties finished 1:12.4 back.

Olympic Pursuit Gold medalist Ponsiluoma shot well, starting with a clean first prone and like Elvira skied typically fast in a wire-to-wire victory. Emil Nykvist shot clean in second place, finishing 1:47.7 behind Ponsiluoma. Sebastain Samuelsson struggled with six penalties in third place, 2:18.6 back. Triple IBU Junior World Championships medalist 19-year-old Philip Lindkvist Floetten in his senior level competition finished sixth, with three penalties, 3:48.5 back.

Men’s Sprint Duel; Elvira Unchallenged

Sunday’s Sprint was a bit more competitive with Ponsiluoma and Samuelsson dueling until the last loop. Samuelsson led after cleaning prone while Ponsiluoma missed twice. In standing, Samuelsson’s two penalties to his rival’s one gave the 20 km winner a one-second lead that he extended to 8.3 second over Samuelsson at the finish. Malte Stefansson, with two penalties finished third, 26 seconds back.

After second in the 15 km, Elvira opened an 18-second gap in the first loop of the Sprint, shot clean in prone and even with a standing penalty, ran to victory unchallenged. Johanna Skottheim, with two penalties finished a distant second, 44 seconds back. Ella Halvarsson matched Skottheim on the range but finished 2.1 second slower for third place.
