Athletes open their doors to reveal biathlon’s real story in new doc series ‘Ski Fast – Shoot Clean’

This February, the International Biathlon Union (IBU) is offering biathlon fans, new and existing alike, something completely different – an intimate documentary series that invites the audience into the athletes’ world like never before, and allows these global stars to tells the sport’s story in their own words.

The six-part documentary series entitled Ski Fast – Shoot Clean premieres on 2 February 2026 on the IBU’s YouTube channel. The series will release one 10–12 minute episode per day through 7 February, leading directly into the first Olympic biathlon competitions at Milano Cortina 2026.

Told by the athletes themselves, Ski Fast – Shoot Clean explains biathlon from the inside: what it takes to succeed, what makes the sport addictive to watch and what it costs to perform when the margins are so small.

The series’ biggest strength is its fresh athlete access set against the stunning environment in which athletes, live, train and compete. Over recent months, the IBU and Austrian documentary experts from Media Content Services visited athletes in their homes and training environments, capturing moments that rarely make it to broadcast: routines, doubts, preparation, personality and the quiet details that show what the sport really demands: physically, mentally, and emotionally.

The series features some of biathlon’s biggest names and most compelling personalities, including:

  • Olympic gold medallist and World Cup Total Score winner Sturla Holm Laegreid (NOR);

  • two-time World Champion and 2024/25 World Cup Total Score winner Franziska Preuss (GER);

  • four-time World Champion Lou Jeanmonnot (FRA);

  • current World Cup leader and three-time World Champion Eric Perrot (FRA);

  • Olympic gold medallist and World Champion Elvira Oeberg (SWE);

  • and two-time Total Score winner and four-time World Champion Dorothea Wierer (ITA) and many more

The opening episode, “WTF is Biathlon?”, invites viewers into the sport’s chaos and magic – as athletes explain what biathlon is, why it’s so hard to master, and what makes it unlike anything else in winter sports.

In the following episodes athletes provide exceptional insights into their summer training, into the pressures that come with a mentally challenging sport, and into race tactics and teamwork. The documentary shows different biathlon cultures - from national treasures to an athlete “whose mum doesn’t know what biathlon is”. In the final episode, the medal hopefuls reveal what Olympic competitions in Antholz, biathlon’s most iconic venue, mean for them.

As Laegreid puts it, biathlon is defined by personalities as much as performance:

“There are so many different types of biathletes. I am more calm maybe. But you have athletes who are really up there and really down and bounce between those. And you have a lot of different personalities. I feel biathlon is a unique sport in that there is no right way to do it… there’s only wrong ways!”

Designed to be watched and shared in the Olympic window, Ski Fast – Shoot Clean is produced fully in English and will remain available on IBU platforms throughout the Games and beyond.
