The IBU Honours King Harald V of Norway: A True Friend of Biathlon
The International Biathlon Union mourns the passing of His Majesty King Harald V of Norway, a devoted and passionate supporter of biathlon. King Harald, who passed away at the age of 89, was a familiar and beloved figure at the Biathlon World Cup finals in Holmenkollen, where he engaged with athletes and fans alike. His deep knowledge of the sport and warm presence made every encounter special, and his visits—often accompanied by Her Majesty Queen Sonja—were a delight for the entire biathlon family.
King Harald’s reign spanned 35 transformative years, during which he modernised the Norwegian monarchy, broke traditions, and served as a unifying force for his nation. His legacy extends beyond the throne. He touched the hearts of the biathlon community, where he will be fondly remembered for his enthusiasm and support.
The IBU would like to extend its heartfelt condolences to His Majesty King Haakon, the Royal Family, and the people of Norway.
May King Harald V rest in peace.
