Sustainability is a core strategic priority for the IBU. Through our Sustainability Strategy 2020–2030 and the new Roadmap to 2030 under our Target 2030 strategy, we are committed to reducing emissions, strengthening climate resilience, and transitioning to sustainable operations.

To support the next phase of implementation, we are looking for an experienced and motivated Sustainability Manager to join our team.

THE ROLE

As Sustainability Manager, you will play a leading role in implementing the IBU’s climate transition and sustainability roadmap, with a strong focus on impact reduction, climate adaptation, sustainable event delivery, Organizing Committee (OC) enablement, and KPI management.

As part the Sustainability team, you will work closely with the IBU OCs, internal departments, partners, and external stakeholders to drive the implementation of our sustainability targets and support the commitment to reduce emissions by 50% by 2030 and progress toward net-zero by 2040.

ABOUT THE IBU

The International Biathlon Union (IBU) is the international governing body for the sports of biathlon and para biathlon, recognized by the International Olympic Committee and International Paralympic Committee. Headquartered in Anif near Salzburg, the IBU is a non-profit organization registered in Austria that regulates the sport and oversees the competition organization world-wide. In cooperation with its 64 member national federations, the IBU uses competitions, events, programs and other activities to promote and develop participation in biathlon.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Climate Transition Management

  • Support implementation of the IBU Climate Transition Action Plan (CTAP) and related measures across IBU operations and events

  • Manage and further develop the IBU emissions reduction strategy

  • Support climate mitigation and adaptation initiatives in collaboration with OCs and operational stakeholders (internal & external)

Organizing Committee Sustainability Enablement & IBU Operational Integration

  • Support OCs in implementing sustainable practices and integrating sustainability measures into event operations, procurement / supply chain, venue planning, and legacy initiatives (in cooperation with the Sport & Event department)

  • Develop tools, templates, and guidance to support sustainability planning and execution

  • Facilitate best-practice exchange and knowledge sharing between OCs and NFs through workshops, webinars, and targeted support sessions

  • Collaborate with internal departments and external partners to integrate sustainability considerations into operational decision-making

Sustainability Reporting & KPI Management

  • Manage annual sustainability reporting aligned with the IBU Sustainability Strategy and Roadmap to 2030

  • Develop sustainability dashboards, tracking tools, and management reporting

  • Monitor progress against IBU overall sustainability goals and impact KPIs and identify improvement opportunities

  • Contribute to Executive Board reporting on sustainability performance and risks

  • Conduct strategic reviews of ongoing implementation of the strategic framework

Sustainability Communications & Awareness

  • Manage sustainability communications related to IBU sustainability targets, reporting, and event delivery

  • Lead sustainability awareness campaigns and stakeholder engagement initiatives

  • Develop sustainability content for the IBU website, reports, presentations, and communications materials

Sustainability Education & Capacity Building

  • Coordinate sustainability education and training initiatives in collaboration with the IBU Academy

  • Develop and deliver sustainability learning content for IBU stakeholders

  • Support sustainability awareness and behavioral change initiatives across the biathlon community

WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR

Essential

  • University degree in sustainability management/climate policy, environmental management, sport management, or a related field

  • 5+ years of professional experience in sustainability management, ESG, climate strategy, event sustainability, or a related area

  • Passion for sustainability in sport

  • Excellent project and stakeholder management skills

  • Outstanding communication and organizational skills

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in an international environment

  • Strong analytical skills and confidence working with data and reporting tools

  • Excellent written and spoken English; German skills are an advantage

  • Be legally allowed to work in the EU

Desirable

  • Experience in events, tourism, or international organizations

  • Knowledge of carbon accounting, ESG KPIs, climate transition planning and implementation

  • Experience with sustainable procurement and supplier engagement

  • Familiarity with sustainability reporting frameworks and standards

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Full terms and conditions will be set out in a contract.

Renumeration: A gross monthly salary that is orientated on the Austrian Collective Agreement for Trade (Österreichischer Kollektivvertrag für Handel), paid 14 times per year. The actual salary will reflect the successful candidate´s qualifications and work experience.

Travel: Travel will be required during season and off-season.
