IBU Shortlisted for IOC Climate Action Award 2025

The IBU is proud to announce that it has been shortlisted for the IOC Climate Action Awards 2025 which recognize organizations across the Olympic Movement that are taking meaningful steps to address the climate crisis.

The IBU’s nomination centers on its Athlete Ambassador program, a pioneering initiative that empowers biathletes to become advocates for sustainability within and beyond the sport. Through training, mentorship and active engagement, the program equips athletes with the knowledge and tools to promote climate awareness, inspire behavioral change, and drive environmental stewardship in their communities.

The IOC Climate Action Awards include three categories (Athletes, National Olympic Committees, and International Federations), and this year’s selection reflects the growing commitment of sport to sustainability and climate leadership.

Being shortlisted by the IOC for the third year in a row underscores the IBU’s position as a leader in climate action in the Olympic Movement. This year’s recognition acknowledges not only the IBU’s institutional sustainability efforts, but also the power of athletes’ voices in driving systemic change.

Riikka Rakic, IBU Head of Strategy and Sustainability said:

We are delighted that the IBU Athlete Ambassador program has been recognized by the IOC. This underlines the major role athletes play in inspiring real climate action by their fans and followers and helping us fully leverage the power of sport as a platform for change.

The winners of the IOC Climate Action Awards will be announced in the lead-up to the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games.
