LOOP ONE Festival Post-Event Report Highlights Strong Sustainability Foundations
The International Biathlon Union (IBU) has published the official post-event report for the first-ever LOOP ONE Festival, marking an important milestone in its commitment to delivering more sustainable events.
Held in Munich’s Olympiapark, the first edition brought together environmental, social and economic sustainability initiatives across every aspect of the festival. This post event report provides a comprehensive overview of achievements, learnings and future opportunities.
Environmental Impact in Focus
The report estimates the event’s carbon footprint at 2,803 tCO₂e, with spectator travel accounting for more than 90% of emissions. Public transport was the most common travel mode, reflecting positive progress in sustainable mobility.
Additional measures included reusable catering systems, near-complete lead recovery at the shooting range, and a tree-planting initiative replacing traditional winner bouquets.
Strong Social and Local Engagement
The festival placed a strong emphasis on inclusion, featuring Para Biathlon competitions with athletes from seven nations and offering accessible activities for all visitors.
Sustainability education was another key pillar, with over 1,000 visitors completing a sustainability quiz and 152 volunteers undertaking dedicated training. Local partnerships and up-cycling initiatives, such as turning old bibs into bags, further supported regional value creation.
Clear Path for Future Improvements
While visitor feedback on sustainability was highly positive, the report also identifies areas for development, including waste management, community outreach and further reductions in energy and transport emissions.
The LOOP ONE Festival sets a strong foundation for future editions, with the IBU aiming to build on these learnings to further advance sustainable event delivery.
