My Perfect Summer Holiday with Luki, Marketa, Jakov, Meril and Pietro (Part 1 of 2)

Cool autumn mornings are a sure sign that summer is in the rearview mirror; likewise for holidays as the new season approaches. Still every athlete has plenty of memories and a few souvenirs as a reminder of those lazy, hazy days in the sun, probably somewhere on a beach, with a biathlon-free mind.

My Perfect Summer Holiday with Luki, Marketa, Jakov, Meril and Pietro (Part 1 of 2)

Over several sunny afternoons recently, ten athletes including Lukas Hofer, Marketa Davidova, Jakov Fak, Meril Beilmann and Pietro Dutto shared some memories and photos from those spring and summer holidays, past and present. Here are the first five of those perfect holiday memories, with five more coming next week.

Lukas Hofer: New York, Beaches and a Bison Burger
BW:
What do you remember about holidays as a child?
LH: As a kid? I think the best one was when we went up in the mountains for a week. I am a mountain lover and that was really special to be there with friends and family; out of technology and just being in nature.

BW: Where did you go on holiday this year?
LH:
I went with my mom, girlfriend, her brother, my sister and her husband to New York; it was my second time there and I really loved it. In just five years, here were so many new buildings; I was surprised by that.

BW: What was the best thing you ate on holiday?
LH:
Bison burger… that was the best one. I was thinking I would go there and eat so much fish, but the meat was so delicious!

Jakov Fak: Three of Us on the Beach

BW: What is your best memory of holidays as a child?

JF: To be honest, as a child, I did not have so many holidays. We had a farm with some livestock and most of the summer; I spent the morning in the fields and in the afternoon, went to club training. I always felt so good helping the family that I never missed the holidays. It was the same thing for most of the people I knew. This is kind of funny since we lived so close to the Adriatic, with one of the most beautiful coastlines in Europe. But this was a good learning experience about work coming first, holidays next.

BW: Where did you go on holiday this year?
JF:
This year, of course we went to the Croatian coast and had a really good spot. We went to a camping place with mobile homes; it was a gift from one of my sponsors, Adria Mobil. Ours was right on the beach facing the sea; it was a perfect place.

BW: What are three things that are always in your travel bag when you go on holiday?
JF
: Toothbrush, pants, cell phone…and money!

BW: What was the best thing you ate on holiday this year?
JF:
We went to the Golden Garden in Zadar on my daughter’s birthday and had scampi; that is my favorite. When I eat seafood, it is always scampi. My wife, Matea used to live in Rijeka; whenever we went out to eat there, I always ordered Risotto with scampi.

BW: What was the most fun thing you did on holiday?
JF:
I rode on a jet ski for the first time. Early one morning, I rode for an hour along the coast with a friend, going from to island to island; it was a perfect experience.

BW: When you close your eyes and think about your holiday, what do you see?
JF:
I see the three of us on the beach.
