IBU Press Release following IOC Decision
Salzburg, Wednesday, December 6, 2017
During its meeting in Lausanne on Tuesday, December 5, 2017, the IOC Executive Board examined and discussed the findings of the commission led by the former president of Switzerland, Samuel Schmid, addressing the systematic manipulation of the anti-doping system in Russia. This report also addressed in particular the manipulation in the anti-doping laboratory at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, which targeted the Olympic Games directly.
After discussing and approving the Schmid Report, the IOC EB among others took the decision to suspend the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) with immediate effect and decided to invite clean individual Russian athletes to the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang under strict conditions. These athletes will participate under the name, “Olympic Athlete from Russia (OAR)”. They will compete in a uniform bearing this name, under the Olympic Flag. The Olympic Anthem will be played in any ceremony including these athletes.
The IBU will act according to the IOC decisions and guidelines concerning the participation of individual Russian athletes at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang. The IBU President states: “We believe that the decision taken by the IOC Executive Board is an important step in the efforts to protect clean athletes.”
The IBU Executive Board will hold an extraordinary meeting on December 10 and will afterwards invite all World Cup teams and athletes for an information meeting, followed by a press conference (exact time to be announced) in Hochfilzen.
