2018 IBU Summer World Championships

Salzburg, August 15, 2018: The 2018 IBU Summer Biathlon World Championships will be held in Nové Město na Moravě, Czech Republic, from August 22-26. Approximately 250 biathletes representing 28 nations are expected to participate in the ten rollerski competitions.

The highest quality competitions are guaranteed in Nove Mesto with ten former Summer Biathlon World Champions trying to repeat their triumphs including triple World Champions Martin Otčenáš of Slovakia and Michael Rösch of Belgium.

Kristjan Oja, Race Director for the event, commented, “This IBU Summer Biathlon World Championships will see one of the largest starting fields ever. With all of the traditional Summer Biathlon nations represented we will see exciting competitions in Nove Mesto. We are thrilled that the senior competitions will be shown live on TV in several countries.”

The Czech home team will be led by Pyeongchang 2018 Olympic sprint medalists Michal Krcmar and Veronika Vitkova, plus Ondrej Moravec and Michal Slesingr, both of whom own IBU SBWCH Gold medals. Sochi 2014 Olympic Relay Gold medalists Valj and Vita Semerenko of Ukraine are also competing in this rollerski highlight of the IBU calendar.

These Championships are the first of two major IBU events scheduled this year for the Vysočina Arena. BMW IBU World Cup 3 is scheduled for the week of December 17-23, with sprints, pursuits and mass starts over four days. Two years ago, over 120,000 spectators jammed the stadium and tracks, with at least that many expected this coming December.

A live stream of the competitions will be available on the IBU website www.biathlonworld.com.

Admission to all three competition days and the Opening Ceremonies is free-of-charge.
