Martina and I
As promised, here are the news from last weekend in Altenberg, Saxony, GER. That’s where the second part of the German Championships took place, the Sprint and Pursuit Competitions.
Martina Beck and I could unfortunately not participate in the competitions, we both were a little sick. She had a sore throat and my ears felt as if I was on an airplane while having the flu. The permanent pressure was explained by the doctors with swollen mucosas and they recommended not to do the competitions. At least now I have an explanation for my long weak phase.
Both of us did not want to risk to really get sick and we were not in the right condition for competitions. In competitive sports you count as being sick as soon as you have a light cold because it already makes your body too weak to properly do your job. If I felt like this before the last competition of the season I would probably still compete. Then, it does not matter if I get really sick afterwards. But now, in September and before an Olympic season, it’s a different story.
Of course we were also in the fortunate situation to not have to do the German Championships as qualification competitions, as for example Sabrina Buchholz. She also had a sore throat last Monday and decided only Friday that she could start. For her these competitions decided over her career. In the worst case she would have had to quit competitive biathlon, but that will, thankfully, not be the case now. In situations like that it is very difficult to completely wait for an ailment to be cured in order to not have a relapse later.
Martina and I gave our bodies some rest and went to visit the highmoor of Zinnwald. While the children there ran around in undershirts, we were all wrapped up in scarves and had Buffs over our ears. It was really nice there and for a while it was a good alternative to our hotel room.
Now I hope to be completely healthy again really soon and then we will see if I can start at the Summer Biathlon World Championships in Oberhof next weekend.
Best regards
Andrea
