The IBU Medical Committee met in Oberhof, Germany from January 7 - 9. Among the topics at this meeting were how to ensure the health of the athletes, to coordinate the anti-doping efforts of IBU in the coming months and to plan an anti-doping educational seminar for the youth and junior athletes at the IBU Y/JWCH in Nove Mesto (see report below) and IBU OECH in Ridnaun.

IBU Secretary General Nicole Resch was recently nominated to the IOC Sports and Law Commission as a representative of the Association of International Winter Sports Federations (AIOWF). This commission is responsible for all legal matters concerning the sport at Olympic events. Her contribution to the Commission provides a valuable exchange of experience for both the IOC and AIOWF/IBU. A first Commission meeting was conducted on January 7- 9, 2011.

The IBU Legal Committee met in Ruhpolding January 14 - 15, 2011. The members discussed several questions concerning the IBU Constitution and Rules. During this first meeting after the IBU Congress, they also established the rules for the committee.

The IBU, in cooperation with UNESCO, held an anti-doping seminar for the young generation at the IBU Youth and Junior World Championships Biathlon in Nove Mesto na Morave which was attended by about 180 athletes and coaches. Among the topics at the seminar were the danger of doping, the doping control process and an interview with former athlete and now coach Raphael Poiree about his experience with doping controls and the online registration system ADAMS.

The IBU Guide, Biathlonworld Magazine and the exclusive picture calendar were issued in December and distributed during the E.ON IBU World Cups and by postal mail in January. The popular picture calendar once again was printed as a limited edition of only 999 pieces. This year, it contains beautiful images of the fascinating sport of biathlon.

The official magazine of IBU, Biathlonworld, contains a profile of the Ukrainian biathlon twins Vita and Valj Semerenko, recaps of the E.ON IBU World Cups 1-3 and updates on the life after the sports careers of Kati Wilhelm, Vincent Defrasne and Halvard Hanevold. Less than one month after it was published, the popular magazine is now almost out of stock, the next issue will come out in March.

The traditional distribution of the supplies from the IBU Equipment Pool once again took place in Hochfilzen. Forty-eight nations received material worth more than 1 million Euros. This material is supplied by the Gold, Silver and Bronze Supplying Partners of IBU and ranges from skis, poles and wax to rifles and ammunition, underwear as well as sports attire, glasses, shoes, spotting scopes to sets of massage supplies. This year, five people were busy distributing the material for 1 ½ days, the fastest this has been done as of yet.

This support of the developing teams by IBU is unique in an international federation and has played an important role in creating such close and strong fields of competitors, guaranteeing the thrilling competitions we enjoy all season long.

The International Biathlon Union now makes it easier to stay up to date on biathlon wherever you are. For all users of the iPhone a new biathlon app is now available free of charge in the App store. It allows the user to see competition start times, start lists and the results of all E.ON IBU World Cups, IBU Cups, IBU Youth- and Junior World Championships and Open European Championships on the go. It’s now easier to stay up to date on news stories and the Total Score for World Cup and IBU Cup. For all users of other mobile devices these functions are now also available on the new mobile version of the website www.biathlonworld.com that is adjusted for easy use with touch screen mobile phones so fans will now get all the latest information no matter where they are.
